A bit of background before we begin: Every trend showcased in the Michaels Trend Book is preceded by a blurb, to whet the appetites of the Product Development team and introduce the theme and aesthetic driving each upcoming retail collection. For each trend, I was provided with a collection title, three short descriptors, and a selection of mood boards and in house artwork to extrapolate from. In some instances, I was also responsible for developing said artwork.
‘Tis the season for simple pleasures! Naturally dyed textiles, dried fruit, and gingerbread spice come together in an immersive holiday experience you can taste, touch, and smell. Paper and stoneware feature prominently, amongst a forest of mixed wood finishes with accents of burnished gold, while traditional tartans see the introduction of heathered textures to really put the “#cottagecore” in Christmas.
Christmas goes global this holiday season! Hand-embroidered accents and quilting lend Old World charm to modern crafting and decor, while classic enamel finishes and semi-gloss woods are painted with whimsical folk elements. Kids from all continents leave out cookies and milk, and stay up late to catch a glimpse of Pere Noel, Babbo Natale, or good old Father Christmas, as he weaves his magic around the world.
Red and green are the heart of the season, balanced with accents of warm burnished brass. Velvets, beaded appliques, and other luxury materials lend your favorite Christmas classics an air of elegance, and warm wood finishes keep them exactly the right kind of toasty. Vibrant poinsettias and evergreen accents bring all the charm of a snow-capped fir forest indoors, while traditional plaids welcome wandering carolers home for the holidays and invite them to cozy up by the crackling fire.
Having a blue Christmas never looked so good, with sumptuous velvets and glassware in an ocean of hues, from soft sky to lush lapis lazuli to navy so deep it seems bottomless. High-shine metallics and their burnished brethren sparkle like celestial bodies against accents of pale birch. The glittering glamor of the holiday proves that there’s just as much magic in settling down for a little stargazing on a crisp winter’s night as there is in waiting up for Santa.
Who says Christmas past has to be ghastly? Pops of pink and teal combine with traditional reds and greens to evoke the holiday spirit of yesteryear. Colored paper takes center stage from greenery to giftwrap, while Pyrex and other mid-century material mainstays dazzle and delight. Warm honey-toned woods with natural woven accents keep things cozy and classic, and themed cocktails served in dimensional milk glass give partygoers the juice to Jingle Bell Rock the night away.
Monochrome makes merry this Christmas, pairing chalky brights with bold black and classic winter white. Matte finishes blend with shine to lend the trend textural appeal, and dimensional paper crafts dominate decor. Old school enamel and gold accents give a cheeky nod to the classics, while colored wood and acrylic keep this modern holiday sleek and playful.
