A bit of background before we begin: Developed with a combination of personal research and data analytics services such as the Worth Global Style Network, the Color Report is an overview of all shades under the rainbow, and how they’ve changed or stayed the same from one season to the next. In combination with a whole host of other “trend specialty reports,” it constitutes the backbone of the Michaels Trend Book.
The world is opening up again in Autumn/Winter 2022, for a consumer who has experienced a serious shift in the dynamics of their life. Priorities have changed, with a major focus on balancing mental and physical health, family and social relationships, and indulging in small, intimate luxuries. Optimism and togetherness remain the motivating mindsets, while consumers continue to demand transparency and slower, more thoughtful product development from their favorite brands.
Rich color saturations with mineral undertones take summer color holdovers to slightly deeper, darker hues. While dark reds adopt blue undertones and start to lean berry, right reds go bricky and less saturated, bringing sophisticated shades like classic “Artisanal Red” to the forefront.
Even in the fall, oranges remain warm and fruity, with desaturated copper tones rooting energetic shades like trans-seasonal “Mango Sorbet.” Yellows maintain their robust appeal and run the gamut from soft, sweet “Butter” to earthy, mustard hued “Satin Brass.”
Greens veer in two different directions, with yellow tinted shades like “Olive Oil” carrying forward on one side, while blue tinted tones step up on the other. Soothing shades like “Jade” and “Loden Frost” reflect the consumer wellness
mindset, while bright pastels like “Neo Mint” speak to our continued embrace of technology.
Blues skew rich and dark, hearkening back to historical pigments and showcasing the innate mineral qualities of the color.
“Atlantic Blue” carries over as a strong, trans-seasonal tone even as it cedes space to its cooler cousin, “Arctic Blue,” while bold “Lazuli Blue” makes a dramatic entrance.
Pink continues on as a key player, with “Orchid Flower” carrying over into Autumn and bringing everything from hot “Electric Magenta” to warm, mid-tone “Sweet Coral” with it.
Purple also steps up to the plate this season, and, like green, appears to be a hue of of two minds, with dusty mineral shades like “Lilac Chalk” on one side and bright, clean, technological tones like “Digital Violet” on the other.
Tinted shades take the place of traditional black. From the rich, chocolatey undertones of “Dark Oak” and the cool forest shadows evoked by “Dark Springs” to deep burgundy “Beetroot,” there’s a shade in every color to bring a modern twist to the time-honored classic.
Like most other colors this season, pastels start to skew a little deeper, adopting gray undertones to curb their sweetness and render them more versatile. “Copper” continues on as king of the metallics, with one foot firmly rooted in the wellness mindset and the other celebrating our glorious return to the great outdoors.
From metallics to textiles, grays are being fully adopted as fashion colors, with a whole host of tints and undertones to bring a new twist to an old favorite and allow designers and consumers alike to mix-and-match with greater breadth and depth.
